Mission & History

Mission

Game Theory Academy has a mission to provide decision-making skills and economic opportunities to low-income youth.

  • Game Theory Academy teaches students how to think differently about money, increasing their financial stability and academic achievement while decreasing criminal activity.
  • Young people graduate Game Theory Academy with improved confidence in navigating the economy, and superior analytical skills they can apply to financial, education, career, and risk decisions.
  • Business education programs teach decision-making skills that help corporate executives maximize their resources. Game Theory Academy takes those same concepts and applies them to the life changing decisions young people make as they transition into adulthood.
  • Game Theory Academy  serves 400 youth ages 15-21 each year in the San Francisco Bay Area.

History

Game Theory Academy was founded by Patricia Johnson in 2008 with the support of board members Namita Kamath and Debra Koffler. We served 70 youth in our first year and now share our curriculum with 400+ youth annually.

Patricia Johnson, Founder and Director of Game Theory Academy

Patricia Johnson, after receiving her MBA at the Yale School of Management in 2002, joined Pacific News Service/New America Media. During her tenure as Finance and Development Director she managed the organization’s doubling in size and wrote the business plan for a successful earned income venture. Over time, she became involved with the organization’s youth programs, helping launch two new projects: a youth advocacy collaborative with the state library and a youth magazine based in Fresno, Ca. Patricia conducted writing workshops in juvenile halls in Alameda and Fresno counties from 2003-2009 for The Beat Within. She received a BA in political science from the University of California at Berkeley.

GTA’s current board members include Keith Beato, Vice President at Wells Fargo; Lisa Forti, Policy Director at the Alameda County Social Services Agency; Moira Geraghty, President of Solar Projects Solutions; Waseem Noor, Consultant at Russell Reynolds Associates; Sophia Skoda, Director of Finance at EBMUD; Tracy Tuens, Managing Director at Ascent/US Bank.
